PRIMARY CUP FINALS 2021
BURGESS CUP FINAL, Wed 16 June, Gussie Park - Forthill 5 Barnhill 0
Forthill beat Barnhill 5-0 in the Burgess Cup Final. In the first final of this season's short programme, adapted to the few weeks available following the lifting of covid restrictions, the two teams from the east were pleased to get a full game under their belts at Gussie Park. A late switch to the Gussie Park astroturf from the grass at Elliot Road was needed to be in line with the health guidance and to resolve other problems. Unfortunately the health safety measures meant that games had to be behind closed doors so family, friends and classmates had to miss out on supporting the players.
Conditions were good, a pleasant playing temperature, dry with sunny spells even though a bit of a rainbow appeared in the sky at the presentation, maybe just to signify that the pot of gold in the shape of the Burgess Cup was now in Forthill's possession.
Once Forthill scored the first goal, they took control and were 3-0 up at halftime. Forthill continued in the second half with another couple of goals while Barnhill finished the game strongly with some chances to get on the scoresheet. Forthill however defended well to hold on to the clean sheet. Despite conceding the five goals, the Barnhill keeper played a great game and produced some super saves to prevent Forthill from going further ahead.
THOMSON CUP FINAL, Wed 16 June, Gussie Park - Ballumbie 3 Fintry 2
The second game of the evening was the Thomson Cup Final between Ballumbie and Fintry. Fintry had played all their games in the original round while Ballumbie had been a game short due to covid problems elsewhere. Both teams had shown their willingness to attack on the way to the final.
This was almost the proverbial game of two halves, but a sclaff made all the difference. With both sides going for it, it was not a game to take your eyes off.
Ballumbie went ahead 1-0 in the 6th minute and continued to press, going 2 up just a minute later. The goal rush stopped there and Fintry recovered their composure to see the rest of the half out without conceding any more. Fintry also had the joy of seeing one of their squad turn up late in the first half after going missing to the wrong venue. So 2-0 to Ballumbie at halftime.
The second half was mainly Fintry so most of the action was going north. Fintry pulled one back early in the half and Ballumbie struggled to make any headway. Fintry then equalised at 2-2 and had a shot bounce off the top of the bar. What was to be the winner came out of nothing. The Fintry keeper was not under any serious pressure to kick the ball clear with his right foot but when it became a sclaff Ballumbie were right on it and the ball was in the net, 3-2. Ballumbie gained strength from this and were able to see the game out, also hitting the bar in the closing minutes. Fintry fought hard to get another equaliser but it was not to be, Ballumbie winning 3-2 on the night.
ROCK CUP FINAL, Thur 24 June, St.Andrew's PS - St.Andrew's 1 St.Mary's 0 aet
With the revised date for the remaining finals being disrupted by further covid issues, a late arrangement was made to get the DCSFA Rock Final arranged for Thursday morning on the enclosed pitch at St.Andrew's PS. The pitch was in good condition and the sun was shining, and a close end-to-end game ensued. Both sides give their all, with keepers and defences limiting serious goal opportunities.
Unusual for any Primary game when the regulation time was up it was still 0-0 and the game went into extra time of 5 minutes each way. After 50 scoreless minutes it only took 2 minutes of extra time for the deadlock to be broken with St.Andrew's breaching the St.Mary's defence to finish from a few yards out. The game continued from end to end without any further major chances and St.Andrew's held on to their lead to lift the cup presented by Mr.Marra.
It is hoped that the remaining Linton Cup Final between Ancrum Road and Tayview, which fell through on health grounds, could be organised after the holidays before the new season begins, despite the understandable difficulties which might appear.

posted 6 May / updated 13 May
The shortened Primary season kicked off with a DCSFA Rock Cup game between St.Ninian's and SS Peter & Paul. Several games are organised now in order to make up for lost time. Unfortunately the Secondary season is going to be very limited, with a mixture of possible friendly games and some SSFA games for St.John's as they try to complete last season's unfinished business in the Shields.
However the late lifting of local council restrictions meant that St.John's Seniors sadly miss out on their semifinal v. Bearsden Ac. who now go through to the final to face St.Ninian's HS (Giffnock). The Giffnock team beat Woodmill HS (Dunfermline) on penalties after a very entertaining 3-3 draw at Airdrie on Monday 10th May in the opening game of the Scottish Shield programme for May and June. St.John's are still involved in the U15 Shield semifinal v. St.Maurice's HS (Cumbernauld), the U15 Girls Shield semifinal v. Perth HS and the Senior Girls Shield semifinal v. George Heriot's School (Edinburgh). (** Update - unfortunately St.John's lost all their semifinal games - see foot of page for details.)
For our local football the following proposals were considered in order to move forward :
Primary - there are 21 schools interested and cup competitions can be organised in such a way that all schools can play some games over the next few weeks.
In conjunction with the DCSFA the following has been agreed :
There will be no traditional leagues, no Junior Sports Cup, no Banks Trophy, no Cameron Cup. no Small Schools Cup.
The cups on offer will be the Burgess Cup, Linton Cup, Rock Cup and Thomson Cup (all 7s). In addition for the schools also in the DCSFA the Meikleham Cup (5s) will be available as usual. (** Update - the Meikleham will not now take place this season.)
The 7s cups will involve initial groups of mainly 4 teams, as geographically close as possible to minimise travel, who play one another in a round robin league (with our usual 3-2-1 points system). The top 2 teams in each group / the top team in each section in the Rock Cup meet in the finals.
(** Update - Given the current situation, the finals will be changed to a more secure venue than usual.
The finals will all be played behind closed doors with NO SPECTATORS ALLOWED.
There will be no publicity prior to the finals. Arrangements will be made individually with the schools concerned to ensure a safe environment.)
Burgess Cup - Barnhill, Claypotts Castle, Eastern, Forthill (3 games each) Final - Barnhill v. Forthill
Linton Cup - Ancrum Road, Camperdown, Craigowl, Tayview (3 games each) Final - Ancrum Road v. Tayview
Rock Cup (Section A) - SS Peter & Paul, St.Clement's, St.Joseph's, St.Mary's, St.Ninian's (4 games each)
Rock Cup (Section B) - Our Lady's, St.Andrew's, St.Francis, St.Pius (3 games each) Final - St.Mary's v. St.Andrew's
Thomson Cup - Ballumbie, Downfield, Fintry, Longhaugh (3 games each) Final - Ballumbie v. Fintry
Secondary - though there is a general interest, the long wait for restrictions to be lifted plus the assessment workload makes it difficult to offer anything specific other than a few friendlies.
With St.John's involved in playing out Scottish Shield games from season 19-20, the following teams remain who could play friendlies in the remaining weeks once restrictions are finally lifted :
U14 - Baldragon, Braeview, Grove, Monifieth, Morgan, St.Paul's
U15 - Baldragon, Grove, Monifieth, St.Paul's
U16 - Baldragon, Braeview, Grove, Monifieth, St.Paul's
Teams listed above may end up just playing one friendly as a forerunner to next season when hopefully every school should be back.

ONE YEAR ON - posted 8 March 21
This week marks the first anniversary of the end of our school football thanks to the pandemic. On 12th March 2020 there were five Primary games played and one Secondary cup game.
Nobody could foresee the instant collapse happening except perhaps* for one person at the U13 Logie Cup game at Elliot Road on Thursday 12th March 2020.
Harris had just beaten St.Paul's to go through to the next round. St.Paul's were therefore out of the cup and they had not qualified for the Champions League so in reality that was their season finished.
One of the St.Paul's lads was overheard speaking to his mum on the sideline at the end, telling her with a disappointed voice that that was the season now finished, there were no more games. It was discussed with the Harris manager a few minutes later that maybe we could get a few games organised for those teams like St.Paul's and Harris who had not reached the Champions League places for the summer term and this was tentatively agreed. Then the following day all football stopped immediately. Did the St.Paul's player know something the rest of us were blissfully unaware of? Was his middle name perhaps Nostradamus? Who knows?
* Perhaps is the key word here. The poor player probably knew nothing about bats, pangolins, Wuhan, PPE, facemasks or anything else, he justed wanted to kick a ball with his mates. A year later we are all still waiting for that.
BELOW - A few photos from a year ago this week, the whole set is here.

U15 NATIONAL TROPHY FROM LAST SEASON IS SHARED
The Dundee and Forth Valley U15 teams who won their semifinals in March 2020 before schools were closed will now share the trophy.
It had been hoped that a final could have been played. However, with the continuing difficulties and restrictions posed by covid-19, it has been decided that there will not be a final between the two teams, so the competition is shared between the two regions.
Below are the photos of the teams taken on 4th March 2020 in the semifinals when Dundee beat North of Scotland 4-2 and Forth Valley beat Aberdeen 5-1 at Alloa.
It may be some time before the medals are received.

Continuing lockdown restrictions because of the virus push any possible start date further and further back. The Secondary fixtures below now look like they might not be played at all. It may be that we need to review what we can save of the season, both Primary and Secondary, after Easter.
The U15 National Trophy from 2020 will now be shared by both Dundee and Forth Valley who won their semifinals last March - the final will not now be played.
The remaining Shield games from 2020 which are at the semifinal stage will hopefully be rescheduled for May and June, depending on the easing of restrictions. St.John's are involved in 4 of these competitions, see the foot of the page for details.
Without any new football photos to add apart from the MHS U14s above, there are a few more sets of photos from walks in Dundee and into Angus at the foot of the Sweden page, as in the previous days of lockdown.

SPONSORS AT TAYVIEW PS - Our League sponsors went west to meet Primary League Secretary Gerry Dignan and players from Tayview PS and St.Ninian's PS.
There was good support in the run up to Christmas from Matt Edwards, Jim Douglas and Davie Craig from DSA and Sue Batten from Arab Trust who were delighted to visit Menzieshill, meet the players from Tayview and St.Ninian's and renew their sponsorship for this season. Once again Dundee Schools' Football Association is indebted to both DSA and Arab Trust for their commitment to help and support us.
The photo was taken before "social distancing" came into our dictionaries.

Perth HS beat St.John's 7-6 in the SSFA U15 Girls Shield Semifinal from last season. In a game behind closed doors at Lochee Harp it was Perth HS who opened the scoring, then St.John's equalised before Perth HS regained the lead from a 25-yard free kick which looped over the keeper for 2-1 to PHS at the break. In the second half Perth HS increased the lead and it looked like their 4th goal might finish off the game. St.John's fought back well including a great solo goal to go 6-4 up with time running out. Perth HS then gave themselves hope with the next goal and soon levelled at 6-6 to at least set up the possibility of penalties. But into timed added on a PHS run down the left led to a low cross finished at the far post for the very late winner. So Perth HS won in a dramatic finish, surrendering a well-earned advantage late in the second half but recovering with three goals right at the end to reach the final next Friday against Lasswade HS who came back from one down to beat Kilmarnock Ac. 2-1 at Renfrew yesterday. In a game behind closed doors at Airdrie it was St.John's who scored first midway through the first half but St.Maurice's were soon level. St.Maurice's played the last half hour with 10 players once a defender received a second yellow card for a poor challenge. With no further scoring it went to penalties - St.John's had the first penalty saved, then the remaining 9 kicks were all scored, so St.Maurice's go on to play Preston Lodge HS in the final.
Tuesday 1st June
George Heriot's School (Edinburgh) beat St.John's 4-0 in the SSFA Senior Girls Shield Semifinal from last season. St.John's trailed 2-0 at the break at Spartans where there were no fans and had two good chances early in the 2nd half to start a fightback but could not find the target. George Heriot's then added two more the sew up a place in the final against St.Ninian's HS (Giffnock).
Thursday 27th May
St.Mary's beat SS Peter & Paul 6-1 in the DCSFA Rock Cup (Section A) while in the same group at the top of Lochee Park St.Joseph's and St.Ninian's served up a 2-2 draw. St.Joseph's skied a penalty in an exciting but goalless first-half. However they went 2 up in the second half before St.Ninian's fought back and grabbed the equaliser with a few minutes left. See photos from both games.
Wednesday 26th May
St.Joseph's beat St.Clement's 9-4 in the DCSFA Rock Cup (Section A).
Ballumbie beat Fintry 5-2 in the Thomson Cup group. Fintry broke down the right to open the scoring in 5 minutes but Ballumbie levelled soon after. Ballumbie went into a 2-1 lead with a superb strike from the left touchline over everybody to bounce into the net. Early in the second half Fintry equalised at 2-2, but their joy was short-lived as Ballumbie scored within 40 seconds to go 3-2 in front. Two more goals including a penalty for Ballumbie ensured the win, and they could have had more but for twice hitting the frame of the goal and some good work by the Fintry keeper. See photos.

Wednesday 4th March - The Final is not to be played, Dundee and Forth Valley share the trophy
Dundee beat North of Scotland 3-2 in the U15 National Trophy Semifinal at RPC in Caird Park. In the final Dundee will play Forth Valley who beat Aberdeen 5-1 today in Alloa. Dundee took the lead in 6 minutes when Ryan McInnes hit the left post and Ross Clark knocked in the rebound, 1-0. Joy was short-lived as North equalised a minute later from a corner, 1-1 (7m). Dundee went back in front after a penalty was awarded for a push in the back - Stuart Heenan netted from the spot, 2-1 (21m). In the second half North dominated the early part and levelled again for 2-2 (53m). As the game wore on Dundee gained their second win and several substitutions were made in an attempt to avoid the inevitable lottery of a penalty shoot-out. After several attempts just wide of the target it was Stuart Heenan who secured the win with a great goal, winning a challenge on the left wing, drifting in through several defenders into the box and firing in a low shot from 16 yards past the keeper for the late winner, 3-2 (77m). Not the easiest of games against a good North of Scotland team but a National Trophy semifinal is not going to be easy, and Dundee can look forward to a final for the first time since 2014. St.Maurice's played the last half hour with 10 players once a defender received a second yellow card for a poor challenge.
