SECONDARY 12-13
SECONDARY CHAMPIONS - GROVE U13, ST.JOHN'S U14, ST.PAUL'S U15, HARRIS U16, GROVE SENIOR
Mon 24 June - After winning their first two games St.John's just needed a draw to secure the title in the DFCSS U14 Champions League. St.John's beat Harris 9-2 to win the league.
Fri 21 June - St.Paul's beat Grove 2-1 aet in the Arab Trust U15 Champions League Play-Off in the morning kick-off. Grove opened the scoring early in the second half but St.Paul's grabbed a late equaliser from the penalty spot. In the first period of extra-time a free kick from 25 yards was fired over the Grove keeper for the winner.
Mon 17 June - A double for Grove - in the DFCSS U13 Champions League Grove needed to avoid defeat in their last game and beat St.John's 4-2 to become champions; meanwhile at DISC in the Arab Trust DFCSS Senior Champions League Grove just needed a point and beat Morgan 5-3 to become champions.
Tues 4 June - In what turned out to be the only game played in the Arab Trust U16 Champions League Harris beat St.Paul's 3-1 in a nailbiter. Harris took an early lead but St.Paul's equalised direct from a free kick on the edge of the box. On the halftime whistle Harris raced away and stroked the ball low inside the post for 2-1. St.Paul's were twice denied another equaliser in the last few minutes by the Harris keeper and some desperate defending - Harris went up the park and hit the post with three minutes left, then a minute later hit the other post and the ball fell inside for 3-1.

HARRIS U16s - WINNERS OF THE R.M.KEAN TROPHY 2013
Six teams took part in an exciting competition at Craigowl. In League A the holders Baldragon opened the scoring in the first game but St.John's came from behind to win 2-1 - it might have been different if two Baldragon shots had been an inch to the right instead of crashing off the left post. Baldragon took their time to score against Braeview but eventually netted three times without reply. Braeview needed to get a result against St.John's and took heart from an equaliser after trailing 1-0, but St.John's scored twice to win 3-1 and top the group, ending Braeview's interest. In League B Craigie took the lead against Harris but it was not enough as Harris scored twice late on to turn it around. Craigie had to take something from Monifieth to avoid an early exit, but fell behind after a couple of minutes and despite a lot of possession and some clever play they conceded again and Monifieth were guaranteed a place in the semifinals. With Craigie already out the last match between Harris and Monifieth was to decide who would take spot. It looked like a goalless draw which put Monifieth on top on goal difference until the dying seconds when Harris broke the deadlock to win 1-0 and top the group. In the semifinals St.John's scored early against Monifieth but Monifieth capitalised on mistakes and scored four times to claim a place in the final. Harris took on Baldragon and scored midway through the game but Baldragon came back with an equaliser - Harris were not to be denied and scored again to set up the final against Monifieth who they had beaten with a late goal in League B.

MONIFIETH REACHED THE FINAL OF THE U16 R.M.KEAN TROPHY
The final between Harris and Monifieth was just as close as the League B game but as the game wore on Harris found the net with a bit of luck - a well struck shot from the right ended up cannoning off the frame of the goal and hitting the excellent Monifieth keeper who could do nothing to get out of the way and the ball bounced off him and into the net. Harris then added another with a good finish. so at least it did not come down to freak circumstances. So after 4 games of fast-flowing football Harris were the only team left standing and lifted the trophy for the first time since 2008.

The U17 Stobswell Cup was scheduled for March but ironically, considering that almost everything outdoors came to a halt in the prolonged cold then, the indoor tournament had to be postponed because the Sports Hall was undergoing repairs on the original day planned.
The tournament was rearranged for June at Grove and five teams took part in an afternoon league. Holders Baldragon kicked off with a win against Grove's B team but went down to a single goal against Harris. Grove A beat Braeview 2-0 then were nearly held by the B team in the Grove derby but scored a late goal to win 1-0. Harris showed some skillful touches to dispose of Braeview 2-0. Both Grove A and Harris continued unbeaten in their third games, Grove A further denting Baldragon's hopes of retaining the trophy with a 1-0 win and Harris smashing 3 goals past Grove B.
Braeview scored their first goal of the day to salvage a 1-1 draw against Baldragon in the first game where both teams scored. In the penultimate match Braeview went 2 up against Grove B who then scored their only goal of the day - it was an absolute cracker which rightly brought a huge cheer from Grove, nearly lifting the roof off - but Braeview held on to register the win.
With both Grove A and Harris on full points the last match would decide everything - Harris only needed to draw because they had the better goal difference, so Grove had to win. Despite lots of effort the 8 minutes could not produce a winning goal for either side, so at the end of the afternoon it was Harris who ended top of the league. Grove A took the runners-up medals while Harris took the winners medals and the Stobswell Cup for the first time.
With Harris also winning the U16 R.M.Kean Trophy earlier in the season, they are now the undisputed 5-a-side kings, taking over the mantle from Baldragon.

MATCH REPORTS 12-13
THE FINAL WEEK
Mon 24 June - The end of a long hard season came at St.Paul's Academy, the last ball being kicked about 9.20 in the evening before the U17 George Grant Memorial Trophy was presented.
All the outstanding issues had been decided that day or in the days leading up to it. On the Thursday Harris won the rearranged indoor 5-a-side U17 Stobswell Cup while St.John's beat Morgan 2-1 in the last semifinal in the U16 Robert Caira Memorial Trophy to earn a place against St.Paul's in Monday's final. On the Friday the football started at 10.30 in the morning when St.Paul's played Grove in a play-off for the Arab Trust U15 League, necessitated by the 2-2 draw between them earlier in the week. There were no goals in the first half though home keeper Darren Clarkson had to be alert, even being forced to kick one off the line. Into the second half and Cameron Hoskins put Grove ahead fairly early on, and it stayed that way till a minute or so from the end when St.Paul's scored from a penalty, the Grove keeper having the misfortune to see his save hit the post and bounce back over the line. St.Paul's then went on to score from a free kick in the first period of extra-time, the 25 yard shot dipping over the keeper into the net.

ST.PAUL'S (GREEN) v. GROVE (SKY) IN THE U15 LEAGUE PLAY-OFF
GROVE (BLUE) v. MONIFIETH (BIBS) IN THE U13 LOGIE CUP FINAL
Back at St.Paul's for the evening game where Grove took something from the day in the U13 Logie Cup Final. Monifieth were unlucky to hit to bar twice in the first half with the Grove defence all at sea, but the Grove strikers took their chances and led 3-0 at the break. Monifieth pulled one back after the interval but Grove punished any mistakes to add four more and make the final score 7-1. Monday was the last day and St.John's completed their U14 programme with a 9-2 win over Harris at Eton Street, winning all three games in their Champions League to become the DFCSS U14 League champions. After being denied in their cup final appearance at Dens by the valiant Morgan defending, St.John's regained their form at the right time, hitting 21 goals in their 3 Champions League games. The last two games of the season were played on a sunny night at St.Paul's, with the U16 Robert Caira Memorial Trophy Final first up between St.Paul's and St.John's. There was nothing between the sides in the first half and it was only after the break that St.John's took the lead. This did not last long however and St.Paul's soon equalised to make it 1-1. Chances fell at both ends but no goals, and it looked like a penalty shoot-out would be required to separate the teams. Then a couple of minutes from the end St.John's were awarded a free kick in the centre just outside the box and Kieron Gardiner struck the ball into the net for a late winner.

ST.JOHN'S (BLUE) SCORE A LATE WINNER AGAINST ST.PAUL'S (GREEN) AS THE CAIRA TROPHY AWAITS
The closeness of the Caira final was not matched by the last game where Harris faced Grove in the U17 George Grant Memorial Trophy. With only minutes gone Harris opened the scoring and continued their whirlwind start to go 5 up before Grove could manage to find the net to make it 5-1 for Harris at halftime. This was no end of the season affair and both sides went hard at it in an attempt to regain some pride or just win the cup - though it was not a dirty game, the eight bookings (4 each) showed that there was a serious competitive edge. Grove's performance improved in the second half but they could not add to their goal tally, while Harris were able to notch another couple, bringing the final score to 7-1 in their favour.

HARRIS (RED) AND GROVE (BLUE) IN THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON - THE U17 GEORGE GRANT MEMORIAL TROPHY FINAL
So as the players walked off into the sunset, the curtain came down on season 12-13. Despite the difficulties posed by the weather in March which had a serious knock-on effect, all the trophies were played for and won ..... and the players can put their feet up for a couple of months till the new season starts.
GROVE WIN TWO LEAGUES
Mon 17 June - On a warm sunny day in mid-June the first two league titles were decided. After the long winter which put everything back by a month, it seemed we might never reach the point where a league title might be won but Grove were able to pick up two trophies on the same day. At St.John's in the DFCSS U13 Champions League the Grove team who had beaten St.John's 9-2 last week in the cup semifinal needed a win or a draw to take the title. In the end a 4-2 win for Grove was good enough to win the league and St.John's could be pleased with the improvement in form.
Meanwhile at DISC the same scenario applied in the Arab Trust DFCSS Senior Champions League where Morgan hosted Grove. A win or draw for Grove would mean taking home the league shield, a defeat would mean a play-off for one of the teams against Braeview. Morgan started brightly and soon took the lead with a header in at the post, 1-0. It could so easily have been real trouble for Grove as Morgan raced clear down the right but the shot hit the far post and bounced back for Grove to whack clear. A second goal at this point would have put Grove out of the equation but they survived the scare and could look back on this as the turning point. The visitors did not panic and eventually hit the back of the net, 1-1. Grove soon took the lead in a moment of high drama - a corner from the left swung in viciously and was heading for the goal when it was handled on the line but, unfortunately for Morgan, not by the keeper. The inevitable red card was produced, Morgan were reduced to 10, and Grove took the lead from the penalty, 1-2. Grove now settled in comfortably with the extra man and scored another, 1-3, and then with an "in off the post" further increased the lead before the break, 1-4. Morgan rallied in the second half and it was hard to think they were a man short. As the sprinkler system on the next pitch started to soak everybody on the sidelines and create rainbows all over the place, Morgan pulled one back to make the game interesting, 2-4. Grove regained their three goal lead again from the penalty spot after a foul in the box, 2-5. Credit to Morgan who scored an excellent solo goal to make it 3-5 and again it could have been tighter but Morgan this time hit the near post. Both sides were short of players with school trips and injuries and had to bring in reinforcements from the U16s who slotted in well and looked good for next year's teams. Grove now take over the League Shield from Morgan and, having won the Johnston Trophy at Tannadice, completed the league and cup double.
Final score : Morgan 3 Grove 5
DENS FINALS
Mon 20 May - St.John's and Morgan took the field for the 6.00 kick-off at Dens Park in the U14 Urquhart Trophy Final (sponsored by the Dee Club). The heavy rain had subsided, leaving a misty atmosphere. St.John's attacked from the start and Morgan had to defend well, with David Beattie in the Morgan goal in early action to tip away a 20-yard Saul Cooney shot.
Morgan broke down field on the left but the move petered out - however the St.John's keeper seemed to delay in dealing with the ball and the clearance did not reach as far as he would like, particularly when Bradley Etchels thumped a right-foot shot from between 35 and 40 yards over the keeper's head and watched it sail into an empty net, 0-1 (9m). A belter of a goal which Bradley will remember for ever!

St.John's no doubt felt this was going to be similar to the semifinal where they trailed to an early Grove free kick and pressed for the rest of the game before grabbing a late equaliser. Morgan were always dangerous on the break with Liam Fitzsimmons willing to take the ball quickly from one end to the other, but St.John's looked the more likely to score.
Liam Clarke had a good shot in the 26th minute which forced the Morgan keeper to save at the far post to deny an equaliser. Two minutes later St.John's had their best chance when a cross from the left was skied over the bar by Saul Cooney from 6 yards. A minute from the interval Liam Fitzsimmons was bowled over in the box after a good run to the bye-line but the referee decided to play on instead of awarding a penalty.

Halftime : St.John's 0 Morgan 1
St.John's showed they meant business in the first minute of the second half when Nathan Scott shot from around 35 yards, almost the same spot from where Bradley Etchels had scored, but the long-range effort hit the top of the bar and bounced over. Two minutes later St.John's shot narrowly wide and in the 41st minute Liam Clarke struck the left-hand post. The traffic was all one way and next up for St.John's was Liam Thompson who fired in from the left but keeper Beattie produced a tremendous save to tip the ball over for a corner.
With St.John's in all-out attack mode, it was a rearguard action from Morgan who had David Beattie in fine form in the goal, able to mop up anything which beat Josh Mackenzie and Kyle Reid who worked tirelessly in defence. Grant Collier's strength and battling quality was an important asset for Morgan and Liam Fitzsimmons ability to take the ball for a run and relieve the pressure on his defence proved vital in the overall scheme of things. When he was able to thread his way into the final third and win a corner, it gave the Morgan defenders a chance for a breather before the next onslaught.
To their credit St.John's never gave up and battled to the end in search of an equaliser but Morgan almost seemed to enjoy their backs-to-the-wall role as they cleared anything St.John's threw at them. The final whistle blew, and Morgan had survived to win the Urquhart Trophy for the first time ever.

MORGAN ENJOY THE MOMENT
St.Paul's and Grove played the second final at Dens, the U15 Senior Sports Cup Final (sponsored by DFCSS). There was nothing between the teams in the opening exchanges as both teams probed for an opening. After the tension of the first final, the game seemed a little flat in comparison and needed a goal to lift the atmosphere.
The opening goal duly arrived in the 24th minute, St.Paul's delivering a free kick from near the bye-line on the right to the far post where Jamie Herron rose above the defence to head home, 1-0 (24m).

St.Paul's should have doubled the lead just before the break when a cross from the right found Alex Gibb right in front of the goal and all he had to do was nod it in for 2-0 - somehow the ball flew wide left and the chance had gone, much to Grove's relief.
Halftime : St.Paul's 1 Grove 0
The second half had just kicked off when the game turned. Grove were reduced to 10 men for denying a goal-scoring opportunity, although the talking-point for the rest of the evening was whether the ball had been touched in the tackle. What was certain was that it was a penalty for St.Paul's and Alex Gibb slotted the ball home from the spot, 2-0 (42m). The Grove ten turned in a good performance and competed well.

The game looked to go out of reach for Grove just after the hour mark. St.Paul's were awarded a free kick some 35 yards out which looked too far to be dangerous but Jordan Elder's fierce strike seemed to go right through the Grove keeper and into the back of the net, 3-0 (64m).
But a matter of seconds later Cameron Hoskins raced through the middle of the St.Paul's defence and keeper Darren Clarkson could not prevent the ball rolling over the line, 3-1 (65m).
The two goals in a minute galvanised the crowd and the atmosphere till the end of the game was superb, as there was an expectation that Grove could pull another goal back despite their numerical inferiority. However it was not to be and 6 minutes from time St.Paul's nearly put the result beyond doubt when a shot from left of centre looked destined for the net, only for Grove keeper Callum Mcara to produce a fantastic save, tipping the ball onto the bar and away for a corner.
St.Paul's finally clinched it in added-on time when a corner from the right was headed in by Rian Murphy, 4-1 (80+1m).

TANNADICE FINALS
Mon 13 May - The first finals of the season took place at Tannadice on a bright sunny evening, though there was still a chill in the air, in keeping with the cold spring so far. The pitch looked in remarkably good condition after the harsh winter.
Morgan and St.John's took to the field for the 6.00 kick-off in the U16 Dundee United Cup Final (sponsored by Arab Trust). The opening exchanges gave a hint that there was going to be nothing between the teams. Morgan attacked from the kick-off, St.John's countered, Morgan broke up the field ... and so the game continued from end to end. St.John's were quick on the break, Morgan won a few corners and it was the yellow shirts who caused the first gasps of breath from the crowd after 10 minutes with a near thing. Clear-cut chances were few and far between as both sides battled for superiority.

On the half-hour St.John's saw an opportunity when the Morgan keeper came out to the edge of his box to jump up and claim the ball, only to fumble in the air before eventually grabbing the ball. Morgan had one good attack before the break but shot wide.
Halftime : Morgan 0 St.John's 0
Halftime : Morgan 0 St.John's 0
The second half was similar in style, though the chances started to increase. Morgan shot from the right wing, forcing Dylan Cooney in the St.John's goal to leap up at the near post and a mixture of save and post managed to see the ball away. St.John's attacked and forced a corner, though they ended with a striker floored in the box. Morgan attacked again down the right and hit a lob towards the far post but the ball went wide, watched all the way by the keeper.
14 minutes into the half came the breakthrough, St.John's attacking through the middle, Morgan only partially clearing and Aiden Benvie opened the scoring, 0-1 (54m). The game continued to flow back and forth but it looked like St.John's would hold on until Connor Lawson broke through inside left and fired into the bottom corner for a Morgan equaliser, 1-1 (75m).
Morgan finished the game with 10 players as the referee spotted a shirt-pull which meant a second yellow and a red card for the Morgan defender. With no further goals the game came down to a penalty shoot-out.

St.John's stepped up first and fired into the net, Morgan matched them, 1-1. St.John's had their second shot saved but the referee adjudged the keeper to have moved early so St.John's had the reprieve of a retake and rammed the ball into the back of the net, while Morgan then fired past the left-hand post, so 2-1 after 2 kicks. Both sides scored their 3rd kick, 3-2 after 3. St.John's missed their next kick and Morgan scored to even it up at 3-3 after 4. St.John's scored their 5th and it meant that Morgan had to score their 5th to keep in the contest - it was a firmly struck penalty but Dylan Cooney leapt to his left to turn the ball away and was swamped by his teammates who raced from the halfway line to start the celebrations.
Final score : Morgan 1 St.John's 1 (3-4 pens)

COLIN STEWART OF ARAB TRUST PRESENTS DANIEL THOMSON OF ST.JOHN'S WITH THE U16 DUNDEE UNITED CUP
Unusually St.John's won the cup with a penalty shoot-out in every round :
a 1-1 draw at Monifieth in the 1st Round finished in a 5-4 penalty win, then a 0-0 draw against Harris in the Semifinal was only resolved by another spot-kick contest, St.John's winning 8-7, and now a 4-3 penalty victory against Morgan after a 1-1 draw. It is the 18th time St.John's have lifted the Dundee United Cup.

With both Harris and Grove reaching the latter stages of the Senior Shield it was perhaps no surprise that they faced each other in the Senior Johnston Trophy Final.
Harris were unfortunate to be missing Lloyd Archibald at the back, who was recovering from a broken leg, but otherwise both teams were at full strength and the teams who had contested last season's U16 Dundee United Cup Final at Tannadice were eager to take one another on again.
There was nothing between the teams in the opening stages and the game swung from end to end without any real chances being created. Just after the midpoint of the first half Grove took the lead when Jordan Garden burst through the centre into the box and beat the Harris keeper to fire the ball high into the net, 0-1 (25m).
Harris hit back immediately with a free kick on the right, then a corner which Grove cleared. Grove survived the pressure to create more attacks but then a defensive lapse gave Harris a great opportunity in the 40th minute, when a routine backpass from 30 yards was picked up by the Grove keeper and an indirect free kick was the result. The Grove wall stood only a couple of yards in front of the goal-line but once the kick was taken they jumped up and Harris were hurried into a shot high over the bar and the chance was passed up. Harris ended the half on the offensive but could not breach the Grove defence.
Halftime : Harris 0 Grove 1
Grove started the better after the break as they went in search of a second goal. Harris defended well and the game settled again to a fairly even contest. As the game entered the last quarter of an hour Grove started to press a little harder, helped by the fresh legs of the substitutes eager to make their mark.
Craig Chalmers looked lively up front and was willing to take on the Harris defence. With time running out a Craig Chalmers cross from the left was met perfectly at the far post by the onrushing Ryan Winter who smashed the ball high into the net for the clincher, 0-2 (87m).

MAN OF THE MATCH RYAN WINTER
The game was played hard and fast but in good spirit as well. Lord Provost Bob Duncan presented the Lee Walker Man of the Match Trophy to Ryan Winter of Grove who had an excellent game in midfield, capped by his decisive goal near the end. The teams received their medals before the Lord Provost presented Grove captain Matty Allan with the Johnston Trophy.

GROVE'S MATTY ALLAN RECEIVES THE SENIOR JOHNSTON TROPHY FROM LORD PROVOST BOB DUNCAN
Grove had never won the Johnston Trophy before so it was a first. The Grove win also set another first - they are the first team to go through their whole school careers winning five finals in a row. The Menzieshill team from 2001-2005 did have a 4-in-a row sequence winning the U14 Urquhart Trophy in 2002, the U15 Senior Sports Cup in 2003, the U16 Dundee United Cup in 2004 and the Senior Johnston Trophy in 2005 - at that time the U13 competitions were not played for so 4-in-a row was the maximum.
Grove's 5-in-a-row started with the U13 Logie Cup win in 2009, then the U14 Urquhart Trophy in 2010, the U15 Senior Sports Cup in 2011, the U16 Dundee United Cup in 2012 and the Senior Johnston Trophy in 2013.
Semifinal day in the Senior Johnston Trophy.
Wed 8 May - The early kick-off was Monifieth v. Harris. Confusion about the start time meant that Harris were arriving in dribs and drabs, the game getting underway finally at 2.30 even though Harris only had 10 on the field. This did not deter the visitors who attacked from the start and won a corner on the right. The home defence could not clear the corner and Harris thumped in the loose ball at the far post, 0-1 (1m). Monifieth fell further behind soon after, Harris delighted to get on the scoresheet again, 0-2 (7m). The home team fought back immediately as Harris were adjudged to have handled in the box and Monifieth scored from the spot, 1-2 (9m). Following the storming start the game settled down, Harris now with their full complement of players. The visitors always looked dangerous on the break and regained their 2-goal advantage with a shot from the left which the home keeper could only parry, but straight to the feet of an opponent who calmly slotted the ball in at the far post, 1-3 (27m). With halftime not far away Monifieth struck again when a diagonal pass from the right to the inside left position was stroked into the far corner, 2-3 (34m).
Halftime : Monifieth 2 Harris 3
With Harris looking the sharper in the first half, Monifieth worked hard to get back into it and soon turned the game on its head. First, a run down the right to the bye-line ended in a low cross which was knocked in at the near post for the equaliser, 3-3 (49m). Harris were rattled and soon conceded an unnecessary free kick for a rather wild challenge. Monifieth made them pay, as the free kick toward the far post was turned back to near the edge of the box and was volleyed superbly into the bottom corner of the net, 4-3 (51m). Harris found their second wind and went in search of the equaliser. Monifieth had only just managed to clear one attempt off the line, but two minutes later were picking the ball out of the net when another attack down the left was cleared off the line, but Harris grabbed the rebound and struck home, 4-4 (58m). Two minutes later Harris were back in the lead, a free kick from the left was not cleared, and Harris fired home for 4-5 (60m). With time slipping away Monifieth piled on the pressure in an attempt to save the game but with the final whistle approaching Harris shot home from inside right into the bottom corner, 4-6 (81m)
Final score : Monifieth 4 Harris 6
In the second semifinal the game was switched at the last minute to Fairmuir Park which was more suitable. There was nothing in it in the 1st half, and neither keeper was tested.
Halftime : St.Paul's 0 Grove 0
As the second half started, Grove thought they had taken the lead but it was chalked off for offside. Another Grove attack soon after produced a corner on the right. The corner was not cleared properly and a shot from just inside the box sailed past the keeper, 0-1. Near the end Grove scored the second to wrap it up, a strong run down the right finished with a firm low cross, turned in at the penalty spot, 0-2.
Final score : St.Paul's 0 Grove 2
Reports from April :
Wed 17th Apr - Following the prolonged poor weather throughout the winter and early Spring, the rush to get cup games played started in earnest after the Easter holidays.
However a return of heavy rain meant that a number of games had to be postponed. One that survived at Lochee Park was the U16 Dundee United Cup (sponsored by Arab Trust) 1st Round game between Menzieshill and Craigie. The rain had eased off to a drizzle by kick-off time and the pitch was reasonable considering how heavy the rain had been, and the game was exciting. Menzieshill went a goal up after 5 minutes but Craigie fought back well, and netted an equaliser 20 minutes later. It looked like being level at halftime but with the last kick of the 1st half Menzieshill regained the lead to make it 2-1.
The end-to-end encounter was brought back all square again when Craigie equalised again 10 minutes after the break, 2-2. With no further goals the entertaining contest had to be decided on penalties. Craigie were first up in the penalty shoot-out and the first four shots were all scored. Craigie's third kick was parried by Kieran Coates in the Menzieshill goal and this save was to prove crucial. Menzieshill continued to score all their penalties despite the valiant efforts of Lee Maloney in the Craigie goal who had made some terrific saves throughout the game. He could do nothing about the 5th Menzieshill kick and Menzieshill went through 5-4 on penalties to face the winners of St.Paul's v. Morgan.
Fri 19th Apr - A bright sunny afternoon at DISC, no snow, no rain, no wind - normal weather was back, as Morgan and Harris took the field for the U14 Urquhart Trophy (sponsored by the Dee Club) 1st Round game.
Harris had beaten Morgan 4-0 in the league match earlier in the season but it was Morgan who looked the more up for the game after they had weathered the initial attacks from Harris.
Morgan got through the defence to make it 1-0 but the expected Harris comeback did not materialise. Instead, after 25 minutes, it was Morgan who doubled their lead with a cracking solo goal. Liam Fitzsimmons picked up the ball on the left wing 10 yards inside his own half and raced down the left beating Harris players for pace, then he came inside, beat a couple of defenders and shot past the keeper at his near post, 2-0.
In the second half Harris could have had a penalty kick as Morgan stretched out a leg in the penalty box, though there may just have been a touch on the ball. As luck would have it, it was Morgan who won a penalty two minutes later when a Harris defender dumped a striker in the box - no arguments about the decision but the spot-kick hit the right-hand post, as if to even out the moment of controversy a couple of minutes previously at the other end.
However Morgan did not let the miss affect and had soon scored a third goal to put some daylight between the teams. Harris got a consolation goal with 5 minutes left, a vicious strike from the corner of the penalty area out on the right flying past the keeper into the far corner - a great strike, but too little too late to change the result. Morgan won 3-1 and go on to face Craigie in the semifinal.
ALL WRAPPED UP IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS

AIDEN BENVIE PUTS ST.JOHN'S U16s TWO UP FROM THE SPOT
The pitch was perfect but the overhead conditions showed no sign of letting up as the second half got under way. Donnell Ingram scored the third for St.John's as the home side with the wind at their backs continued to dominate. Further pressure led to a Liam Harper strike for 4-0. On the hour mark Kieran Coyle took aim from just outside the box and smashed the ball past the keeper to give St.John's a 5-0 lead. Shortly afterwards Forfar decided there was no way back in the match and with the rain giving everybody a miserable time it was agreed to cut the game short so that everybody could dry off.

Auchmuty had hardly been in the game for twenty minutes and the pattern was to continue as Grove struck twice in four minutes. Darren Mackie wide on the right hit a hard cross-shot at the keeper who lost control and could not keep the ball out of the net, 7-0 (42m).
Two minutes later a superb possession move resulted in the 8th - the ball was played around the defence with keeper Adeel Ahamed involved in the passing move before Ranald Bowie took the ball up the left and set up Kieran Dack to slot past the keeper, 8-0 (44m).

GROVE (BLUE) TAKE ON VIEWFORTH (YELLOW) IN THE U13 SHIELD
First up was the Lloyds TSB Scotland U13 Shield 2nd Round between Grove and Viewforth HS. The Kirkcaldy team had preferred to travel to Dundee and give up their home advantage because they could not get a pitch. The Thursday was so wet however that there was only one pitch in the Arbroath Road area which was not flooded and even that had a few pools on it which required some serious brushing. Grove led from the opening minute and never looked back. Viewforth to their credit did not let their heads go down and managed to score a couple of goals in the second half but Grove ran out 13-2 winners and can expect a sterner test in the 3rd Round where they play home to another Kirkcaldy team, Balwearie HS.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE BACK OF THE NET - LOGAN IRVINE SCORES FOR ST.JOHN'S
As if one set of double figures was not enough, a double helping followed four days later. This time it was St.John's taking on Kirkcaldy HS in the Lloyds TSB Scotland U14 Shield 3rd Round. With St.John's having triumphed 6-0 over Madras College in the previous round, and Kirkcaldy having scored 7 without reply against Arbroath Academy, a close game was expected.
But the game was over as a contest after about 5 minutes as St.John's piled on the pressure, scoring in the opening minute, doubling the advantage a minute later and at halftime it was 9-0. Kirkcaldy HS had hardly got out of their own half in the first period yet they did manage to make a few attacks after the break, but the goals were only going in one direction and it ended 15-0. Next up is a home game against Beath HS who won a penalty shoot-out in Forfar.

Wed 7 Nov - ST.JOHN'S SCORE SIX IN ST.ANDREWS
St.John's turned in a confident display in St.Andrews in the Lloyds TSB Scotland U14 Shield 2nd Round to eliminate Madras College.
St.John's played into the wind up the slope in the first half and dominated from the start. The home team could not make any headway going down the slope, even with the wind at their backs and it was 15 minutes in before the visiting keeper got his first touch of the ball. For all their dominance St.John's were denied by some good saves from the home keeper or were off-target with their shooting. But it was just a matter of time and Liam Thomson gave the good travelling support something to cheer about with a shot from inside the box which beat the keeper's dive, 0-1 (20m).

A few chances were passed up on both sides in a fairly even start. Grove then won a free kick 20 yards out and Calum McHardy's shot curled round the wall into the postage stamp for 1-0 (12m). That was the only goal of the first half, despite some hard long-range shooting from the visitors.

Jordan Garden should have made it 3 not long after but the shot rolled wide. On the hour mark Ryan Winter broke on the right and fired in a cross which Jordan Garden tucked away for 3-0 (59m), helped by the keeper slipping at the wrong moment. Then Kieran Dack grabbed his second, breaking the offside trap, rounding the keeper and stroking the ball into the empty net, 4-0 (71m)
Near the end Darren Mackie got his reward for a good shift on the right with a well-taken solo goal, 5-0 (83m). Queen Anne who had a couple of players cautioned then saw a red card and had to play out the remaining minutes a man short.

League reports from September / October :
Grove and St.Paul's switched their Arab Trust DFCSS Senior League game to St.Paul's and the pitch looked in good condition on a bright sunny afternoon. Much was expected here with St.Paul's featuring a number of the players who had won the Senior Johnston Trophy and the U17 Grant Trophy in style last season, and Grove with several players who had contributed to the U16 Dundee United Cup win and the Senior National Trophy success.
After an even start to the game it was Grove who hit first when Kieran Dack finished off a cross from the left, 1-0 (5m). St.Paul's fought back in an attempt to equalise but must have feared the worst when the second goal went in - there seemed to be nothing on when Jordan Garden picked up the ball wide left on the bye-line, but he showed skill to beat two tackles inside the box before ramming in a fierce strike at the near post - an early contender for goal of the season, 2-0 (15m).
Aaron Kane came on for St.Paul's to try to limit the Grove dominance and it worked for a while but not long before the break Grove grabbed a third. Darren Mackie outpaced the defence down the right and slipped the ball inside to Kieran Dack who picked his spot from the edge of the box, 3-0 (36m).
The result was almost put beyond doubt 8 minutes after the interval with Jordan Garden breaking through the middle to finish from the edge of the box, 4-0 (48m). Grove then passed up a number of chances with some wayward finishing, and St.Paul's missed a good opportunity with a shot placed wide of the target.

GROVE (GREY) GO 4-0 UP v. ST.PAUL'S (GREEN) IN THE SENIOR LEAGUE
St.Paul's then won a corner on the right and the dangerous ball was headed in by Cameron Johnstone at the far post, 4-1 (73m).
With time running out, it looked like that would just be a consolation goal for St.Paul's but it merely stung Grove into further action as they added three goals in the last 4 minutes. Calum McHardy hit the bar, Darren Mackie hit the rebound towards the far post where Kieran Dack tapped in to complete his hat-trick, 5-1 (76m). Two minutes later Darren Mackie finished off a Craig Chalmers cross, 6-1 (78m) and Darren Mackie broke the offside trap to return the favour in the last minute for Craig Chalmers to get on the scoresheet, 7-1 (80m).

St.John's beat Monifieth 3-2 in the DFCSS U13 League in a very close game. Monifieth were playing their second game in two days, having beaten Baldragon 6-4 the day before. The visitors took the lead with a speculative shot which caught the keeper out, 0-1 (12m). St.John's pressed hard to get back into the game and the Monifieth keeper made a superb save to tip a goalbound shot over the bar. However from the corner on the left Monifieth struggled to clear and St.John's eventually forced the ball home from close range, 1-1 (19m). A minute later and St.John's were ahead, a 25 yard lob beating the keeper all ends up, 2-1 (20m). Monifieth had the chance to pull level just before halftime when a penalty was awarded for a foul in the box, but the keeper redeemed himself for the mistake on the first goal by saving the spot kick.
Halftime : St.John's 2 Monifieth 1
Halftime : St.John's 2 Monifieth 1
There was little between the teams in the first part of the second half, St.John's having the best chance with a solo run down the right ending in a shot which hit the base of the far post. Three minutes later St.John's added to their lead, the Monifieth keeper saving the first attempt but unable to stop the follow-up, 3-1 (55m).
Monifieth reduced the leeway immediately when a striker was dumped in the box and a second penalty was awarded. This time the shot was hit hard just under the bar, giving the keeper no chance, 3-2 (56m). Monifieth could well have had a third penalty as another forward seemed to be downed in the box but nothing was given. St.John's lived dangerously in the final minutes as Monifieth piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser. Three corners in a row for Monifieth kept the crowd on their toes, but eventually the ball ran wide and the final whistle blew.

Halftime : Craigie 2 Braeview 2
Braeview went ahead for the first time early in the second half and the tide seemed to have turned, 2-3. With an hour gone Craigie scored from the penalty spot to equalise at 3-3 and five minutes later took the lead again to make it 4-3. Braeview fought back and grabbed a fourth to draw level again. 4-4 was probably a fair result as neither team deserved to lose an exciting encounter watched by a good crowd at Craigie.

Craigie travelled to Monifieth in the DFCSS U14 League and looked in confident mood, buoyed by their Logie Cup win at the end of last season. MONIFIETH (SKY) v. CRAIGIE (YELLOW) IN THE U14 LEAGUE
Morgan beat Craigie 5-2 in the DFCSS Arab Trust Senior League.
Both teams had started the season well so anticipation was in the air.
Morgan should have taken the lead in the first minute on the break but the shot flew a couple of inches above the bar. Five minutes later they did get on the scoresheet, Barry Wilson taking advantage of a defensive error to strike, 1-0. Midway through the half Morgan increased the lead, again Barry Wilson's speed allowed him to reach the ball before the keeper, 2-0. Ten minutes later Craigie reduced the deficit with a close-range header from Gavin Thomson, 2-1. Five minutes from halftime Barry Wilson escaped the offside trap and headed in a cross from the left at the near post to complete his hat-trick. 3-1. Almost on halftime Craigie pulled one back, sidefooting a cross from the left back across the keeper, 3-2.
Morgan added to their lead in the second half, even though a man short, with two goals from Corey Gray, both times outpacing the defence and finding the net when it looked like the chance might have gone. Craigie did not give up but Morgan's pace up front was the real difference as they went on to win 5-2.

THIRD WIN IN A ROW FOR ARBROATH HIGH - Monifieth 1 Arbroath High 4
Tues 6 Nov - Unusual occurrences at Monifieth where the home plan had been to field one team against Queen Anne in the Shield and another team against Arbroath High in the League. With Queen Anne failing to turn up because of transport problems Monifieth had over 25 players ready for action, and it was agreed to give both teams a half each against Arbroath High.
The Arbroath boys were quick to put pressure on Monifieth who had to clear off the line in the first couple of minutes. The reprieve was only temporary as Arbroath High beat the keeper to the ball and knocked it inside the post into the bottom left with defenders desperately trying to get back to clear, 0-1 (5m). Monifieth settled after the early setback and the game developed into a midfield contest which Arbroath High just edged but Monifieth looked sharp on the break. The visitors doubled their lead not long before halftime with a low shot into the right corner beating the home keeper's dive, 0-2 (24m).
Monifieth put their other team on at halftime and started the second period brightly, forcing corners which were well defended by Arbroath High who were then quick on the break, only to be denied by good saves from the Monifieth keeper. The home team won more corners from their dangerous attacks but they were often wasted. The visitors still looked the more dangerous with a break down the left bringing a good save at the near post by the keeper who was glad to concede a corner. Although the game was swinging from end to end it was perhaps no surprise when Arbroath High notched a third goal following some pressure from corners, 0-3 (48m).
The home team were determined to get on the scoresheet and a break down the left ended in a cross which flew over the keeper but also too far ahead of the strikers, and when the ball was recovered a Monifieth handball brought the move to an abrupt halt to the relief of the defenders. Another good home build-up was confidently and calmly nullified by the Arbroath defence. Four minutes from the end the visitors stroked in a fourth to put the result beyond doubt, 0-4 (56m).
Monifieth pressed hard and perhaps could have had a late penalty but the referee considered it a good challenge and waved play on, however the home team finally got the better of the defence and shot home for a consolation goal with the last kick of the match, 1-4 (60m).
