Wednesday 15th March
Arbroath HS beat Carnoustie 8-7 in the Angus Soccer One League. Game of the season, it had everything.
Three penalties, (two scored, one saved), four shots off the bar with varying results and 15 goals including a Geoff Hurst moment, a Ray Clemence moment and an Andy Ritchie moment.
Carnoustie were never in front but did equalise twice and were eventually done out of a draw by the Geoff Hurst moment which was the only mistake the referee made in an enthralling match.
Arbroath HS had the wind at their backs in the first half and nearly took the lead in the 3rd minute when a shot from distance came down over the Carnoustie keeper's head and bounced off the bar. It took till midway through the 1st half for the first goal with Arbroath HS taking the lead, 0-1 (18m). Having breached the Carnoustie defence once the visitors struck again a minute later with a shot which the keeper let slip through his legs a la Ray Clemence, 0-2 (19m).
The home team had been quick on the break through the heart of the AHS defence so it was no surprise when they came back into it with a shot at the second attempt, 1-2 (24m).
A few minutes later the referee did well to spot a tug on an AHS jersey by a Carnoustie defender and the visitors scored from the penalty spot to regain their 2-goal advantage, 1-3 (28m).
This only lasted a minute as Carnoustie broke up the park and hit the bar but followed up to head in the rebound, 2-3 (29m).
Halftime : Carnoustie HS 2 Arbroath HS 3
Arbroath HS, now going into the wind, were first to score again in the second half with only 6 minutes gone, 2-4 (41m) and had a great chance to increase the lead following a trip in the box leading to another penalty. This time the Carnoustie keeper parried the shot leading to a mad scramble to get the ball cleared. Three minutes later the home team had pulled another goal back, 3-4 (48m) and then the Andy Ritchie moment followed soon after when Carnoustie won a corner on the left and the corner flew straight into the net, 4-4 (52m).
But there was no rest, as a minute later Arbroath HS took a free kick on the left and headed in over the keeper to put the visitors back in front, 4-5 (53m).
There followed a few minutes without a goal until the ref saw a challenge on a Carnoustie striker in the box and the home team equalised from the spot, 5-5 (59m).
So far 10 goals and no real controversy but the visitors went ahead again when the ball hit bar, bounced down without crossing the line but in Geoff Hurst style the goal was awarded, despite the protests from Carnoustie players. No Russian or (these days) Azerbaijani linesmen were present to have their say and goal line technology was not set up properly but from the photos it was evident the ball was not even close to crossing the line, 5-6 (61m).
Another minute and another goal, 5-7 (62m) and then a free kick from the corner of the box flew in direct, 5-8 (64m). Though the Carnoustie defence had fallen apart with three goals (well, two real ones) scored in three minutes, the strikers took it upon themselves to get back into the game with another goal, 6-8 (66m) and in the last minute a Carnoustie free kick struck the bar and was quickly followed up to hit the net again, 7-8 (70m).
Time was soon up and the visitors had grabbed full points. Handshakes all round as a fantastic game came to an end. Well done to both teams for producing some great football despite a strong wind and for never giving up.
Morgan beat Monifieth 2-0 in the U13 Logie Cup 1st Round (sponsored by DFCSS) and play Grove or Braeview in the semifinal. Morgan scored in the 12th minute to lead 1-0 at the break. Morgan doubled their advantage in the second half even though there seemed to be some confusion about the goal. In the end Monifieth were not able to trouble the Morgan defence sufficiently to make this an issue.

St.Andrew's beat SS Peter & Paul 6-2 in Arab Trust DSA Section C. St.Andrew's led 3-0 at halftime and any hopes SS Peter & Paul had of using the wind in the second half to their advantage were blown apart in the first minute of the second half when St.Andrew's scored a fourth.
An entertaining game in sunny conditions..
Braeview and Harris drew 3-3 in the DSA U13 League. Harris led 2-0 going up the hill at Elliot Road before Braeview pulled one back but Harris regained their two-goal advantage before the break with a shot over the keeper's head, 3-1. Braeview with the breeze at their backs came more and more into the game and any Harris attacks down the hill were snuffed out. Braeview pulled one back a few minutes from time to give themselves a chance and it was no surprise when they snatched an equaliser with the last kick of the game.
Grove beat Harris 3-1 in the Arab Trust U15 League. Played in a very blustery wind Grove scored the opener into the wind in the first half and defended well against Harris threats, 1-0 at halftime. A second Grove goal after the interval gave the home team a good advantage but Harris scored to make it 2-1 and the game was very competitive till the end. Two minutes from time Grove struck a third goal to wrap up the win.
